In addition to individual board approval for continuing education, this course was designed to meet the specific requirements pursuant to Florida Statute s.400.4785(1)(a) and (b) for direct care of those with Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. This course has been approved by the Department of Elder Affairs (DOEA) to meet the mandatory requirement for Home Health Agencies. Our training provider number is HH 8. The curriculum approval number is HH AD 8674. The curriculum is re-approved by the DOEA every 3 years. The next renewal date is11/22/2020.
Purpose and Objective
This course emphasizes understanding and approaches to use when caring for the client with impaired cognition providing specific suggestions that are appropriate for each state of dementia. At the completion of the course, the participant will be able to:
  • Define ADRD and "dementia".
  • Compare the function of the normal brain to how Alzheimer's disease affects the brain.
  • Differentiate how cognitive impairment from ADRD/Dementia differs from cognitive impairment in normal aging.
  • Identify the stages of Alzheimer's disease and how the disease progresses.
  • Understand how ADRD affects communication skills.
  • Identify strategies and guidelines for verbal & nonverbal communication, and for responding to patients who are noncommunicative or non-responsive.
  • Develop a general problem-solving approach to challenging behaviors.
  • Consider specific strategies and techniques for dealing with challenging behaviors.
  • Recognize general strategies for promoting independence through assistance with ADLs in the beginning, middle, and late stages.
  • Consider examples illustrating care techniques for monitoring, assisting and providing total care in dressing, grooming, eating, bathing or toileting and incontinence.
  • Recognize issues and concerns of family members of patients and participants with ADRD in early, middle and late stages.
  • Understand and recognize the grief process and how it relates to the multiple, ongoing losses associated with ADRD.

Consultants for the Future has been approved by the Florida Boards of Nursing, Clinical Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapy, and Mental Health Counseling, Massage Therapy, Respiratory Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Pathology and Audiology(clinical), Nursing Home Administrators, and the Council of Certified Nursing Assistants, Provider No. 50-435; the course has been approved by the Florida Physical Therapy Association #CE18-91509. Accreditation of this course does not necessarily imply the FPTA supports the views of the presenter or the sponsors. The course is accepted by complementary board approval by the Florida Board of Dietetics and Nutrition. Our DOEA training Provider No. is HH8. The curriculum approval number is HH AD 8674. This course is due to be renewed by of DOEA on 11/22/2020. It is also approved by the Ohio Board of Speech and Language Therapy and Audiology (clinical), Provider No. 50-435; The District of Columbia Board of Nursing, Provider No. 50-435; the Alabama Board of Occupational Therapy (Provider No. 50-435); the Georgia Board of Nursing, (Provider No. 50-435); the Iowa Boards of Nursing, Provider No. 61 and meets the requirements of the Iowa Behavioral Science Examiners for Mental Health Counselors and Marital & Family Therapists, the Iowa Social Work Examiners and the Board of Nursing Home Administrators of Iowa; and the California Board of Nursing, Provider No. 04422. The course meets the requirements of the Minnesota, Ohio, Nevada, Alabama, and Kentucky Boards of Nursing, and other states by reciprocity.
